Since the beginning of our observation in October of 2018 Brexit is constantly the dominating issue in British news. Over 40% of most spread media coverage is made up of Brexit. That amount of publicity means that Brexit is absolutely dominating every aspect of published opinion.

What about Ireland?

When we look at other regions in Europe a different picture emerges. In Ireland the coverage of Brexit is significant higher then everywhere else but less dominant than in the UK.

Brexit in other European regions

In Germany, Spain, France, Greece, Finnland or Malta e.g. coverage of Brexit soars for a couple of days around important events such as another deadline or parliamentary vote. Then the topic disappears for days, sometimes even weeks.

What makes Brexit so special as a news topic?

There is no other issue in Europe that is dominating the news over such a long period of time with this intensity. Most issues even when super important will not be reported on in every region. Brexit and Trump are definit exemptions. However, Trump news have taken a lot more breaks over the last nine months.

Summer break – British tired of Brexit

After the negotiated delay of Brexit by former Prime Minister Theresa May in April 2019 until 31st of October, for the first time Brexit news in UK where scarce.
